Technology × Art: A Virtual Tour of Weiwuying Pipe Organ
The pipe organ in Weiwuying, the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, contains 9,085 pipes and 127 stops. Not only is it the largest pipe organ in Asia, but also one of the finest concert hall organs in the world. Crafted by the renowned German company Johannes Klais Orgelbau, a century-old pipe organ manufacturer in Bonn, this is the largest and most advanced organ they have ever built.
In this digital age, Weiwuying introduces "A Virtual Tour of Weiwuying Pipe Organ," utilizing 360-degree spatial scanning technology to capture every detail of the organ and pair it with expert commentary. With a VR headset, this immersive experience allows users to explore the Weiwuying concert hall and the pipe organ's wind system room—an area typically inaccessible to the public.
A VR Glimpse into the Hidden World of the Weiwuying Pipe Organ
The pipe organ structure functions much like the human body organ. Its wind system resembles the lungs, sending air through the pipes just as air flows through the lungs when a person sings. And each note corresponds to an individual pipe. In this VR journey, starting from the concert hall auditorium, organist LIU Hsin-Hung will guide us into the organ's wind system room and lead us through different levels as we uncover every secret corner of this magnificent instrument!
Highlights
Get an up-close look at the console, stops, manuals, and pedals.
Discover the vast wind system room of the Weiwuying pipe organ, which is large enough to park three cars!
Learn how pipes' length and material (wood or metal) affect their sound.
See how the complex mechanisms operate like a busy factory, producing the sound of the massive instrument.
Find out about the horizontal trumpet pipes hidden at the highest point of the concert hall, producing sounds as loud as a cannon!
※ "A Virtual Tour of Weiwuying Pipe Organ" requires a VR headset and dedicated software. Starting in 2024, Weiwuying will promote this project in rural schools and institutions, upholding its mission of making the arts accessible to all.
The work is supported by the Ministry of Culture Technology Art Venues Innovation Project.
